Eric blinked through blurry eyes. He brought his hand up to a pounding head, felt a bandage.

“Hey there,” came a male voice. “Welcome back.”

His fight, flight, or freeze response kicked in but his body refused to cooperate despite the rush of adrenaline that caused his pulse to kick up a few notches.

“I’m Taft and I’m your nurse today.”

Eric’s skull hurt as he tried to nod. The reason came back to him. The robbery.

“Can you tell me where it hurts?” Taft asked.

Eric pointed to his head and blinked his eyes a couple more times. A fuzzy figure started coming into focus. He was reminded of the last time he used a real camera instead of the one on his phone and had to manually adjust the lens. The target came in and out of focus until he found the right setting. That was basically him right now.

“Anywhere else?” Taft asked.

He shook his head. Big mistake. Blinding pain shot through his skull and down the base of his neck. Pain wasn’t his top priority. “Romy?”

“Your girlfriend is in the waiting room,” Taft said. “An officer is waiting to speak to you the minute you feel up to it.”

“Romy.” All he could seem to manage to speak was one word.

“I can go get her,” Taft relented with a smile.

Eric nodded. More of that pain slammed into him with movement. He was going to have one helluva headache for days from the assault. Guilt wracked him at letting Romy down, though. He’d gotten momentarily lost in the feel of her lips—lips he could taste now when he thought about her—and lost focus. She could have been killed.

He acknowledged how lucky he’d gotten to be the target of men who wanted cash instead of the ones who were after her. He’d crossed a line that could have cost both their lives. Blood rushed in his ears at the thought of losing Romy, at the thought of his mistake costing her life. Anger fired him up as his fists clenched.

Make no mistake about it, he wouldn’t be falling down that trap again, even if it meant keeping her at a safe distance, despite how much he wanted to do just the opposite. Plus, there was the obvious fact he had just set back their investigation. Anything could be happening to her sister right now and he would always wonder how much his mistake cost them. If he’d been more aware, could he have avoided the robbery and saved her sister’s life? Forget about the fact a pregnancy was involved. Eric could never forgive himself if he caused Romy the kind of pain that came with losing a sister and her baby.

Granted, Romy was one of the strongest people he’d ever met. She was certainly refreshing. He hadn’t been on a date in longer than he could remember that made him want a second, let alone spend a whole evening talking to someone. He got uncharacteristically chatty when Romy was in the room.

“I’ll be right back.” Taft stopped what he was doing at the computer.
